Ghislaine Howard:

wardrobe

Clothes shelter, display, hide, impress, define and disguise - they not only contain our bodies they also carry our memories. Their colours, shapes and textures, so familiar to us - chosen by us to wear - have travelled with us through our lives, or those of our friends and family. Ghosts and memories hang about their folds and pleats, linger in pockets and tucks.

I have chosen to celebrate these things - the ones I could not, would not throw away - clothes of mine, my family and friends, garments public and intimate. All of them have for me a certain beauty and charm almost impossible to describe in words - hence the paintings.

In making them I re-visit times past, make something of their magic available to the viewer. They are painted with pleasure and to give pleasure. Many of them are small - suitable to be slipped in to a pocket or purse [handbag] and taken away.
